Her work invites the viewer to explore dialogues between her installations and their settings through a fictional narrative at times referencing film and literature. Her research looks across feminism, gender, an analysis of girl culture and the nouveau roman. interest in the formation and representation of self in a site-specific exhibition exploring gender dynamics, social constructs and identity. Working with print, text, moving images and sculptural installations, she creates scenes that evoke film sets and fictional worlds, employing a visual vocabulary inspired by literature, film and material culture. The non-linear narrative that unfurls across the Tunnel circles around its enigmatic female protagonist. Through intricate sculptures, poetic turns of phrase and glimpses of how the body moves and performs, we are invited to view this world through our protagonist's lens. Bodily behaviour and material culture—fashion, objects we own—carry political and social significance. Burt reflects on the body as a site where social norms and individual expression are constantly negotiated. The exhibition title, Meshes and Teeth, touches upon the tensions between utility and destruction, support and control, inviting the viewer to consider the individual’s relationship with society and our surrounding environments. The exhibition offers spaces of affinity and contemplation while embracing the possibility of individual agency in forging new ways of moving forward. Escape through flight, starvation and madness, the novel chronicles her journey into maturity. Her confrontation with Rochester’s mad wife Bertha, allows her to face head first with her own emotional captivity. Bertha, in the analysis of The Mad Woman in the Attic by Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar examines her as Jane’s dark double. Bertha represents the feral secret side of Jane which she tries to repress since she was a child. The novel’s climax sees the demise of Bertha, allowing Jane to fully reunite with Mr Rochester. They&nbsp;struggled&nbsp;at communicating their emotional states&nbsp;to&nbsp;the boys. The&nbsp;film&nbsp;examines the complexities of male desire and female longing. Unable to express their true selves, the girls&nbsp;fail to&nbsp;smoothly&nbsp;transition&nbsp;from&nbsp;adolescence&nbsp;to adulthood. Lux’s Frame attempts to&nbsp;uncover&nbsp;the subtle and hidden harm societal&nbsp;conventions and regulations&nbsp;of&nbsp;women’s&nbsp;behaviour&nbsp;effect on the female psyche. What is this current, Stein asks without a question mark, suggesting a question that has not yet sought its resolution. Burt takes up this similar question, considering the very currents that prescribe images of ideal womanhood and how these scripts can be refracted and divested of power. The exhibition continues her interest and engagement with film and fiction and considers the key but often eclipsed character of Judy at the heart of Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo who becomes a shadow to the fictitious ideal of Madeleine. Burt envisions the gallery as a mise-en-scène that stages a parallel fiction where Judy’s interiority can be contemplated and complicated. Through a material language that plays with the integration and disintegration of various materials such as metal, wire, ribbon, and lace, Burt choreographs how the unyielding costume of Madeleine that Judy wears can be made vulnerable, yielding to other possibilities of becoming.
